Harmonium Lessons

for individuals or groups

The harmonium is a hand pump organ that has been used for chanting sacred names for over a century in India. Whether you are learning this instrument for the first time or hope to pick up some new songs, Merry has content for all levels of practitioners.

The practice of chanting different names of the divine is known to cause total bliss, and it sounds heavenly when paired with this instrument. The harmonium was designed to harmonize with your voice.

Why would you want to learn the harmonium? If you have a daily sadhana (spirital practice), this is the perfect way to weave in another layer of intention. If you lead kirtan or aspire to lead kirtan, this could be the focus of your sessions. Mantra is another form of yoga.

Do I need a harmonium to learn how to play? If you live in the San Diego area and plan on meeting in person for lessons with Merry, you are able to use her harmonium during lessons. She can give tips on what to look for when purchasing a harmonium should you decide to own one. For online sessions, you will need a harmonium to play.

Merry leads a monthly kirtan at the Soul of Yoga in Encinitas, CA- Join her and a full band on the first Saturday of every month at 6:30pm, and immerse yourself in the experience!

What is Kirtan? Kirtan is a Sanskrit word that means “to praise”. When we sing kirtan, or chant at home with our harmoniums, we repeat short mantras. Mantra means = Mana- mind Tra- to free. The mantras that we chant can free the mind from our anxieties & worries, and connect us with Divine energy. This practice can purify the mind, the heart, the emotions, even physical stress and pain, and bring us to a place where we remember and feel our own true nature. It’s a very simple, yet powerful method of meditation. We put these mantras to music, Kirtan becomes a mantra based musical meditation.

I feel so blessed to practice harmonium with Merry. Her Guidance, devotion, and love shine with each lesson. She has a true gift...not only to lead kirtan, but also to teach and inspire others to sing & live from their heart.
